First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This was the first baseball book to employ a large, generous page and heavy paper, giving the pictures and text the treatment they deserve. The pictures (more than 200) themselves have been carefully selected from a large mass of material and have tried to show each player in his most characteristic likeness, making him a human document.in a critical study of the game." Pictures include the 1869 Cincinnati "Red Stockings," Christy Mathewson, Hugh Jennings, Jack Chesbro, Tommy Leach, Cy Young, Hans Wagner, Hal Chase, Eddie Collins, Fred Clarke, Russell Ford, Jack Coombs, Amos Rusie, Napoleon Lajoie, "Tris" Speaker, and many more. Has 159 pages which are more than 12 inches long. Has sections on The Early Days of the Game; A Review of the 1910 Season; The Art of Pitching; Star Plays and Players; Making a Championship Club The Troubles of an Umpire (has some really funny cartoon strips concerning umpires); Chasing the Pennant; The Minor Leagues and the Season of 1911. The front cover is detached from the spine. The batter and the catcher on the front cover are still in bright colors. The corners are bumped and rubbed, the rear cover is loose but is still intact. All 159 pages are intact and still have the original staples. The book is in fair plus condition, in a little better condition would list for somewhere in the $300 to $500 range. This is an ESSENTIAL book in any complete baseball library. I have around 260 books on the history of baseball, about 240 items on the Minor Leagues and more than 90 items on baseball humor, cartoons and comics in stock. Discounts are available when you purchase multiple items on the same order.
