Presentation Copy from the Author with a rhyming quatrain, to Miss Anne Rochester, signed with his name and number "B.8266" on 5 July 1922, on the free endpaper. Clarence Rae wrote these prison poems while residing in the Eastern State Penitentiary, where he was incarcerated for kidnapping a child. The irony is that after his release he was later re-imprisoned for STEALING BOOKS ! " What of the poetry of this man who one an see is no ordinary individual ! I venture to say that it has an importance that cannot be duplicated at present in American literature. In our generation B.8266 hs written the best poem on the American flag in 'Flag Day - 1920.'" - William Stanley Braithwaite - from his lengthy Introduction.
