Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Zustand: Minimale Läsuren. Ansonsten im einwandfreien Zustand. / Condition: Minimal wear. Otherwise in perfect condition. - Content: This study of Gottfried von Strassburg's poem differs in many respects from its predecessors. I have paid little attention to many topics which have been regarded as staples of Tristan scholarship. Some, like religion, mysticism, sources, and the origins of the Tristan legend, have already been dealt with in far more detail and with more learning than I could ever hope to attain. Furthermore, they only have marginal significance for what I have tried to do. One important matter has been ignored for quite :he opposite reason. I have not discussed Gottfried's use of the rhyming four-beat couplet because there is simply not enough detailed study of the subject available and to attempt such a study here would hopelessly distort my own work. I have tried to show, by a careful reading of the text, that Gottfried's Tristan is a unique attempt to portray the overwhelming power of love and the essential incompatibility between it and the society in which Gottfried's contemporaries lived. The poet struggled with the problem of the correct vehicle to use to express his thoughts on the subject and decided to use the romance in spite of his opinion that its conventions committed it to a view of love and a solution of the conflict between love and society which were far different from his own. Thus the work is at once a positive statement of Gottfried's views and a study in the stylistic methods used to convey them and a negative reaction to the "game-rules" of the - : mance as developed by Chrétien de Troyes and brought into German - Heinrich von Veldeke and Hartmann von Aue. In order to set the poem in context, it has been necessary to provide a brief and, as I am only too well aware, oversimplified account of the problem of sexual love as it appeared to educated men in the High Middle Ages. To this I have added a short discussion of the literary treatment of love found in the romances before Gottfried, particularly in the works of Chrétien de Troyes and in the lyric poetry of the troubadours. The bibliographical material for the study of the poem is now easily available and up to date and there is thus no necessity for a detailed bibliography for this book. The basic information is provided in the "Bibliographical Note." Notes have been kept to a minimum. They are used only when a specific reference is required and are hence more frequent in the introductory chapters than in those on Gottfried's poem itself. The index is intended to be a guide to themes and treatment rather than to the occurrence of proper names. No attempt has been made to list the references to the two principal figures, since their names appear on almost every page. I have used the names "Tristan" and "Isolde" throughout, even though Gottfried himself uses "Isot" as the normal nominative form. There is little point in attempting to follow all the variations of personal names which appear in the versions of the poem in different languages and periods. Only where a title is quoted have I retained the form which the author seems to have favored. Thus the principal characters will be designated as Tristan, Isolde, Mark, Brangaene, Curvenal, Gandin, Gilan, Kaedin, Marjodo, Melot, Morolt, Rual (li Foitenant), Urgan, Riwalin, Blanscheflur, Morgan. Where the name "Isolde" appears alone, it refers to Isolde the Fair. Her mother is called "Isolde the queen" or "the older Isolde." Her rival is "Isolde White Hands." I have provided translations of the numerous passages quoted in Middle High German. There is, however, no way in which a translation can enable the reader to follow Gottfried's stylistic methods. These renderings, which attempt to keep close to the original, can only help him to see how the German text exemplifies them. The translations are my own, but I would like to pay tribute to the help I have received from the excellent prose version of the poem in English by A. T. Hatto in the Penguin series. I have used it constantly when studying such matters as narrative structure and development. I am deeply grateful to my colleague, Professor Joan Ferrante, for her reading of a large part of the typescript and her excellent suggestions and to my student Setsuko Ohara, who edited the whole expertly, beautifully, and spontaneously. It is also a pleasure to pay tribute to the smooth efficiency of William F. Bernhardt, Senior Editor of the Columbia Univer-sity Press, who returned a polished version of the manuscript to me in an unbelievably short space of time. Once again it is an honor to record my debt to that most humane of foundations, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, which provided me with the free time to write.
