Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Jamie Squire (Front cover photo), and Kevin Clark (illustrator). Presumed first edition/first printing. ix, [1], 254 pages. Foreword by Juan Dixon. Illustrations. Scoreboard. Sources. Author's Note. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Ink note on fep. Signed and dated, with sentiment, by David A. Vise on title page. Gary Bruce Williams (born March 4, 1945) is an American university administrator and former college basketball coach. He served as the head coach at the University of Maryland, Ohio State University, Boston College, and American University. In 2002, he led Maryland to win the NCAA Tournament Championship. Williams retired after the 2010-11 season, and is now a college basketball analyst for the Big Ten Network. David A. Vise (born June 16, 1960) has been a journalist and author for over 20 years. He won a Pulitzer Prize and the Gerald Loeb Award for Large Newspapers in 1990 while working as a business reporter for The Washington Post. Here is the untold story of how a secret "kitchen cabinet" of four men supported Gary Williams, enabling him to overcome personal adversity and build a big-time college basketball program that reached the pinnacle of success in 2002 by winning the NCAA Championship. Williams played for Maryland in the 1960s, but upon returning to the school in 1989 he found the program in shambles due to stiff NCAA penalties for recruiting violations that made attracting high school standouts nearly impossible for the coach. Williams tells of how he worked tirelessly to pull the Terrapins from the cellar, both emotionally and on the court. Eventually the coach lifted the team, led by star guard Juan Dixon, to new heights. The book addresses: What gave Williams and the Terps the backbone, stamina, and drive to overcome enormous obstacles? What were the ingredients that Williams blended to produce not only a winning team, but also a successful, respected program? These questions and more are answered.
