Published by John Snow; Edward Moxon; Charles Gilpin; William and Robert Chambers; John Wright, 1848
Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. A compilation of nine disparately published titles from various publishers (detailed below), which a previous owner bound together roughly contemporary to their publication. There is a list of each book inked at front paste down, dated 1848, only two years following the date of publication of the newest of these books, which so seems likely as the approximate date that the compilation was bound together. Black half-leather, marbled paper boards - scuffed, scratched, with heavy edgewear frayed to boards. Spine rebacked with a fairly unobtrusive hinges repair which preserves most of the original leather. Interior hinges cracked; binding else intact. Dampstaining to top margin of first few pages; these pages are also foxed, with the foxing continuing only sporadically throughout the volume. Contents listing inked to front paste down, with additional bibliographic note in heavy pencil at FFEP; sparse marginal notation in pencil; interior else clean of prior owner's notes. Please inquire if interested. Photographs available upon request. The nine titles are: (1) Williams, John. A Narrative of Missionary Enterprises in the South Sea Islands. London: John Snow, 1840. (2) Moffat, Richard. Missionary Labours and Scenes in Southern Africa. London: John Snow, 1846. (3) Hall, Basil. Narrative of a Voyage to Java, China and the Great Loo-Choo Island. London: Edward Moxon, 1846. (4) No Author Given (Thomas de Quincey). Confessions of an English Opium Eater, 5th Edition. Publisher Unknown, 1821. (However, it does appear possible that it is the same uncredited publisher as in the following two volumes). (5) Voltaire. The History, Life and Campaigns of Charles the Twelfth, King of Sweden. Publisher and Date Unknown. (6) Bryant, William Cullen. Poems. Publisher Unknown, ca 1820. (7) Dymond, Jonathan. Essays on the Principles of Morality. London: Charles Gilpin, 1843. (8) Guizot, M. General History of Civilization in Europe. Edinburgh: William and Robert Chambers, 1839. (9) Foster, John. An Essay on the Evils of Popular Ignorance. Bristol: Published by the Society for the Promotion of Popular Instruction by John Wright, 1839.
