The author, a poet of note, examines the key works of the western canon with a view to better understanding the impulses that motivate the writing of poetry. The author's main contention is that the creation of beauty is the singular goal of the poetic endeavor, and that any didactic or moral purpose tends to diminish its essential value. This book will be of value to both casual readers of poetry and to those with scholarly interest in the subject. Its exploration of the philosophy, history, and purpose of poetry makes it a rich resource for understanding the poetic impulse throughout the ages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
