Black spine label with gilt title. See images. Very good condition. Complete with all Plates with the exception of the listed Portrait of Mr. Willis, which appears to be missing from all copies. Sturdy bindings, but rubbed and bumped with minor losses. Internally clean, with occasonal mild foxing / age darkening. Name of previous owner neatly inscribed. Small name & address sticker of another owner on front paste downs. A very nice set.

Magnificent views of the Eastern United States before industrialization altered the landscape. Bartlett was a skilled landscape artist with a keen eye. He travelled extensively in the U.S. and Canada. Ocassional foxing to the plates and tissue guards, Light wear/rubbing to extremities, faded area to the cloth of volume two, mild outer hinge starting. Very good.

The reference is to Norman Witte, the New York/Northampton/Paris rare book dealer and collector, from whose estate this book comes. The first volume of this series is relatively easy to find in the $100 range, but the author neglected to get permission to use Vargas art in this 2nd volume. Consequently the Vargas estate litigated, prevailed, and nearly all copies of the 2nd volume were destroyed. Signed copies are obviously even scarcer. Signed by Author(s).
