This fascinating book examines the origins of the peoples of northern Europe, of the cross~cultures which developed around the North Sea and the Baltic rather than around the Mediterranean. Germans and Anglo~Saxons, Picts, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Scandinavians, and Northern Slavs all met and mingled in the chill northern reaches of Europe, fighting, trading, settling, intermarrying, and influencing one another~and our own lives to an extent that is only being truly appreciated today. Thanks to the splendid scholarship of the contributors to this volume, The Northern World gives up its secrets as we follow the various groups from their earliest recorded histories in about A.D. 400 until approximately 1100. During this period they emerged from practical illiteracy and anonymity into a closely~knit and interrelated series of established states, mostly Christian, bearing in their minds and hearts the seeds of great literature and enormous practical achievements. This story of northern Europe and of the lands which bordered it has certain exceptions. One major Germanic people, the Franks, so quickly adopted a Mediterranean, Romance role and language that by 800 they had become, in effect, an extension of the Mediterranean world~a cultural direction also taken by the Visigoths and Burgundians. And the tribes of southern Germany are not included after the year 800 when they came under the sway of the revived "Roman" empire of Charlemagne. It is clear that some of the allure of the Mediterranean cultures is missing from the development of northern Europe, but it is also true that the technical achievement of the Germanic smith, the sophistication of the Scandinavian boat~builder, the engineering skills of the Slavs, the inventiveness of the Anglo~Saxon or Celtic historians and artists, as well as the brilliance of the German poet induce a well~deserved appreciation of northern cultures. Thus, as Rome destroyed itself and Byzantine power faded, the vacuum left was filled quickly and imaginatively in the North. The process was often disorderly and violent, but ultimately it was northern Europe that had the vision and the necessary energy to ride and master the currents of that period of flux. History, archaeology and philology are only three of the many disciplines used by the student of this period. Among the many other areas of knowledge called upon should be added those of the literary historian, the soil scientist, the legal historian,

Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Decorative Illustrated Boards. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. First Edition. Hardxcover. First Edition. Dad's Army. The Defence of a Front Line English Village. This log is intended for Field Commanders trying to forge a ruthless fighting unit. It therefore deals with war and weapons and how to turn ordinary chaps into tough-as-steel soldiers. It is unsuitable for civilians. These are the words of Captain George Mainwaring who commanded the Walmington-on-Sea platoon of the Home Guard during the Second World War. When Arthur Wilson, the nephew of Mainwaring's platoon sergeant, was asked to write a book marking the anniversay of the outbreak of war in 1939, he travelled to Walmington in search of inspirarion. There he discovered a rich treasure for, in addition to his daily log, Mainwaring had collected a huge dossier of journals, notebooks, letters, clippings and much else about the platoon's wartime activities. From this abundance, Arthur Wilson, has produced a superb book, interwoven with the human and humorous explois of Mainwaring himself, Sergeant Wilson, L/Cpl. Jones, Walker, Frazer, Pike and other fascinating characters. The book is dully illustrated with images redolent of the war years, many showing the platoon defending Walmington. Ir will, contrary to Mainwaring's stern warning, prove a feast for almost everyone. Illustrated. Illustrated laminated boards. 128 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. This has been due presumably to the complexity of his life and works, which defies routine analysis. The stature of his genius and his place in Japan's cultural modernization is only now slowly coming into focus as we have gained competence in viewing Japan's modern cultural dynamics in international terms. Our decision to translate a representative selection of the final works of Ogai's literary career has been motivated by the hope of contributing to a wider appreciationof Ogai's exemplary role in the cultural modernization of the Meiji and Taisho (1912-1926) periods." ; slight wear, some spotting on textblock, else G.
