Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrated Edition. HOW TO MEASURE: REVISED AND ENLARGED. By Guy M. Wilson, Ph.D., and Kremer J. Hoke, Ph.D. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1928. Revised and Enlarged Edition. Original brown cloth hardcover. An interesting early twentieth-century work on educational measurement, standardized testing, educational psychology, and classroom assessment. Originally published in 1920, this revised and enlarged edition appeared in February 1928. The volume examines the development and practical application of standardized educational tests, including methods for measuring achievement in spelling, reading, arithmetic, composition, and other school subjects. Of particular historical interest is the section on measuring artistic ability, illustrated with examples of children's drawings used to demonstrate different levels of achievement. SPECIAL FEATURE: Retains a large original-period folding chart titled "Measuring Scale for Ability in Spelling," by Leonard P. Ayres, associated with the Russell Sage Foundation. The chart contains extensive spelling-word lists, numerical scoring standards, and grade-level comparisons. Its explanatory material states that the scale was developed using approximately 1,400,000 spellings by 70,000 children in 84 American cities. The chart also includes a detailed printing history extending from 1915 through November 1925. This surviving historical educational measurement chart is a particularly interesting feature of the volume and provides a tangible example of early standardized assessment practices. CONDITION: Good. Original brown cloth with blind-stamped front cover and gilt spine lettering. Moderate rubbing and wear to corners, spine ends, and board edges. Interior pages generally clean and legible with age toning and occasional marks. Ex-library copy with classification markings on spine and title page and original circulation materials retained inside the covers. The large folding spelling chart remains with the volume and is substantially present and readable. Chart exhibits original fold creases, age-related wear, small tears, and a significant tear or split along one fold. See photographs for exact condition. No dust jacket. An appealing historical reference for collectors and researchers interested in the history of education, educational psychology, standardized testing, psychometrics, classroom measurement, spelling instruction, and early twentieth-century American schools.…
