Hardbound. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. An account of an expedition through south China by British military intelligence officer Wingate in 1888-89. At the time of his writing the document was considered confidential and not publishable; however some 40 years later it was able to be published posthumously by his widow. W…ingate started out from Shanghai, then travelled westerly, passing through Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, finally crossing into Burma and ending in Bhamo - a journey of some 3,000 miles. Wingate was most impressed by the beauty of the country he traversed and wrote highly of the intelligence, diligence, hospitality and moral rectitude of the people he encountered. An interesting and highly readable account, illustrated by Wingate's own early photographs. Spine lightly tanned; former owner's bookplate on front pastedown; binding firm. Interior pages lightly toned but otherwise clean and unmarked. 327 pp., 15 b&w photos, index, endpaper col. map. Size: 22 x 14 cm.
