The Other Transatlantic is attuned to the brief but historically significant moment in the postwar period between 1950 and 1970 when the trajectories of the Central and Eastern European art scenes on the one hand, and their Latin American counterparts on the other, converged in a shared enthusiasm for Kinetic and Op Art. As the axis connecting the established power centers of Paris, London, and New York became increasingly dominated by monolithic trends including Pop, minimalism, and conceptualism another web of ideas was being spun linking the hubs of Warsaw, Budapest, Zagreb, Buenos Aires, Caracas, and Sao Paulo. These artistic practices were dedicated to what appeared to be an entirely different set of aesthetic concerns: philosophies of art and culture dominated by notions of progress and science, the machine and engineering, construction and perception. This book presents a highly illustrated introduction to this significant transnational phenomenon in the visual arts.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Seen as a great artist in Colombia, elsewhere Bursztyn has remained relatively unknown. The publication is a comprehensive survey on pioneering art practice of Bursztyn and seeks to reflect on and animate new tendencies in research on Feliza Bursztyn and her vibrant body of work. It features texts by prominent writers, researchers and curators - Julia Buenaventura, Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, Camilo Leyva, Daniel Muzyczuk, Lucas Ospina, Sylvia Suarez, Gina McDaniel Tarver, Lynn Zelevansky - and rarely published archive materials. The publication inaugurates the Muzeum Susch and Skira Editore's series dedicated to re-discovering women artists overlooked by the main canons of art history. A pioneer in kinetic sculpture, Feliza Bursztyn (1933, Bogota-1982, Paris) created wrecked metal sculptures with ghostlike yet comical humanoid traits that addressed the social effects caused by the aggressive modernization of Colombian society. Composed of industrial junk, often motor-animated, these works perform a theater of dystopian industrial hybrids. Bursztyn's immersive installations are characterized by their disconcerting mechanical sound produced by the frenetic vibration of the sculptures, as well as by occasional music scores accompanying the pieces. The artist's works and sculptural mise-en-scenes enact sites of aesthetic resistance and antithetical political investment, creating a unique experience that raises awareness on the situation and the perception of women in a male-dominated society and reveal the troublesome face of modernity. Paperback. Condition: New. MacArthur Fellows including Jeffrey Gibson, Kara Walker and more collaborate with and create art in Chicago's urban spacesPublished with MacArthur Foundation. This publication examines the development and reception of Toward Common Cause: Art, Social Change, and the MacArthur Fellows Program at 40 (TCC), a citywide project in Chicago that included the work of 29 artists installed at 19 venues throughout the city. The volume commemorates the widely discussed exhibition, which sought to underscore art's power to catalyze change and to unleash the imagination on pressing social challenges, including environmental justice, public health crises, economic inequality and others.Art in Pursuit of Common Cause seeks to document the ideas, roadblocks, rewards and questions that were raised during the planning, exhibitions and aftermath of the citywide exhibition. An attempt has been made to include content rarely seen in the traditional exhibition catalog, to analyze and amplify the voices of actual visitors and to place the project's learnings in the context of the shifting ground of museum practice.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. An extensively illustrated look at two exhibitions by artist Jeffrey Gibson in Chicago. Beyond the Horizon dives into two recent exhibitions in Chicago by contemporary artist Jeffrey Gibson: Sweet Bitter Love at the Newberry Library and Beyond the Horizon at Kavi Gupta Gallery. The juxtaposition of objects across geographical, temporal, and cultural boundaries was at the center of Sweet Bitter Love, Gibsons first institutional exhibition in Chicago. Sweet Bitter Love included four distinct groups of objects: two sets of paintings (one by Elbridge Ayer Burbank, who created portraits of Indigenous Americans, and the other by Gibson), accession cards from the Field Museum, and a site-specific wallpaper. Significantly, the exhibition featured six new portraits by Gibson that were commissioned on the occasion of the Toward Common Cause: Art, Social Change, and the MacArthur Fellows Program at 40, a multi-site exhibition in Chicago. These portraits were also included in Beyond the Horizon at Kavi Gupta Gallery. This extensively illustrated book includes installation photos and images of individual works in both exhibitions. It features a curatorial essay by Abigail Winograd, texts by Christian Crouch, Dieter Roelstraete, and Kathleen Ash Milby.
