The Handbook of British Birds was a pioneering bird guide published in five volumes by H. F. & G. Witherby, first edition in 1941. It was itself a much enlarged and revised version of H.F. Witherby's Practical Handbook of British Birds (published between 1919 and 1924 as two volumes in three parts). Some of the plates were by Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek the Younger and were licensed after they were painted for Ornithologia Neerlandica, de vogels van Nederland by Eduard Daniel van Oort (published 1922-1935). This set features blue cloth boards and gilt titles to the spine on the outside, and colour plates and black and white diagrams and illustrations throughout the inside. Includes: Volume I: Crows to Firecrest, Volume II: Warblers to Owls, Volume III: Hawks to Ducks, Volume IV: Cormorants to Crane, Volume V: Terns to Game Birds. This set is in a clean, tight condition, with some minor scuffing to the spines and the previous owners name inscribed to each FFEP. Each book measures 17x22.5cm.

Very minor bumping to top of spines on some volumes. Minor bumping to corners. More severe bumping to top corner of back cover of Volume I, though cloth holding. Some stains and light foxing, but mainly to end pages. Pages generally clean and neat. Contains numerous plates, some in colour, and numerous illustrations and diagrams within the text.
