Poster. Folio (17" X 24"). Near fine. Slightest bit of faint wear. An exceptionally bright and handsome example of this "War Savings Stamps" all-text poster, printed in black letters within a blue borders on white stock. A second, smaller blue margin near the bottom, bearing the small oval "Torch of Liberty" logo at upper left corner, notes: "W.S.S. / War Savings Stamps / Issued by the / United States / Government." The War Savings Stamps program was a United States Treasury Department patriotic endeavor to raise funds during World War One and Two by selling interest-earning ten and twenty-five cent stamps primarily to school children. A superb copy, bearing none of the folds and edge tears usually found on these -- a rare survivor in near pristine condition.

White printed paper. 1st printing (presumed). Ca. 1919-20. Broadside, printed recto only. B/w graveyard illustration to left edges. 20" x 11-1/4" "Sixty thousand of our American Boys lie among the poppies of Flanders' Fields in France. To them only is the war over. They have paid the price in full. To countless other thousands of these boys returning home maimed and broken the war will still go on; they will be paying the price every day, during the remainder of their lives. Can we who stayed at home carelessly and thoughtlessly assume the 'war is over' attitude until our balance of account is paid - until we have redeemed our pledge - to bear the final cost no matter what its amount?" This poster is "one of 176 advertisements inserted simultaneously in every newspaper in the State of Oregon on behalf of the success of the Victory Liberty Loan". The information included on the poster describes the "Victory Liberty Loan" as the "Parent Bond of Them All" and draws the Men & Women of Oregon up to participate. "The imprint of fame upon the name of our fair state will turn to a stain of shame if we do not meet the obligation this Victory Loan represents. You are face to face with the real test of citizenship - true Americanism. Let this test find you measuring up one hundred per cent loyal." No holdings found on OCLC. Rare in the trade. Minimal wear to broadside. Faint vertical crease to middle, two faint horizontal creases. An about VG example.

Very good. On linen. Size 20.25 x 26 Inches. This is Frederick Henri Kay Henrion's striking c. 1944 anti-Nazi poster produced during the Allied counter-offensive against Germany during World War II (1939 - 1945). Although emphasizing unity among the Allies, it also subtly hints at underlying tensions. A Closer Look A powerful image, this poster champions the ideals of international cooperation against the Nazi menace. The message is clear: the Allies will destroy Hitler. Each flagged arm - representing the United States, Britain, France, and Russia - tears apart a swastika against a stormy and otherworldly background. The poster was most likely produced soon after the invasion of Normandy beginning on D-Day (June 6, 1944). Analyzing the image, it is likely meant for an audience among the Western Allies, with the Soviet flag appearing somewhat less prominently when, in reality, the Soviets were responsible for the lion's share of the fighting against Nazi Germany. It is also notable that France is included as equivalent to the British and Americans, which is likely a reflection of the stage in the war when the poster was produced when the French Resistance and Free French forces played an important role in the Liberation of their country from Nazi occupation. Throughout the war, Free French leader Charles de Gaulle consistently advocated for himself and his forces to be recognized as the only legitimate French representative and to have an equivalent seat at the table as the 'Big Four' Allied powers (the U.S., U.K., U.S.S.R., and the Republic of China). Despite thoroughly irritating both the British and Americans with his vocal persistence, de Gaulle was remarkably successful in establishing a sort of symbolic parity with the other Allies, formalized by France's inclusion on the Security Council of the new United Nations. Publication History and Census This work was prepared by artist and designer Frederick Henri Kay Henrion c. 1944 for the U.S. Office of War Information or perhaps the British Ministry of Information. It is scarce in institutional collections, with examples being held by the Pritzker Military Museum and Library, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, and the Imperial War Museum. Very good. Closed tear extending 1 inch into printed area (through Delattre imprint in lower left corner below bottom border) professionally repaired on verso. Size 23.25 x 37.25 Inches. This is a c. 1917 G. Delattre World War I French propaganda map of the United States. The map celebrates the U.S. entrance to WWI on the side of the Entente just a few weeks prior. This was an era-defining event that brought new hope to the long-suffering French forces then mired in a static but high-cost trench war. A Closer Look After years of hardship and deprivation, this map aims to raise national morale and promote the wave of fresh supplies then en route from the United States. Text in the upper right lists incoming goods, including ammunition, wheat, gasoline, cotton, machinery, ships, and soldiers. Other supplies are scattered across the U.S., such as gold, silver, iron, beef, and corn. The phrase above the map is Woodrow Wilson's quote, 'We are brothers in the same cause.' Wilson said this in his farewell speech to the French Minister of Justice (and former Premier) Rene Viviani, who visited Washington after the American declaration of war. Vivani repeated the phrase several times in public remarks after returning to Paris. Publication History and Census This poster was created c. 1917 and printed by G. Delattre. We note a single example in OCLC, which is at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. We also note cataloged examples in the French National Archives, the PJ Mode Collection at Cornell University, and the archives of the French Department of Calvados. The map appears occasionally on the private market. References: Cornell University, Persuasive Maps: PJ Mode Collection, 2275.01. French National Archives 6 Fi 3265. OCLC 1263615081.

Very good. Mounted on heavy linen. Size 33.5 x 23.25 Inches. This is a powerful 1945 Slovak-language Soviet World War II propaganda poster heralding the achievements of the Yalta Conference and the Allies' agreement to continue the fight until Germany was defeated. The evocative image set against a bright yellow background features three fists (representing the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union) punching a dejected and depressed Hitler. A Nazi swastika is breaking apart in the background. The text reads, 'Nácistické Nemecko bude dobité v najkratom ?ase - tak sa rozhodli Stalin, Roosevelt a Churchill na krymskej konferencii' ('Nazi Germany will be conquered in the shortest possible time - this is what Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill decided at the Crimean conference'). The Yalta Conference The Yalta Conference was a meeting between U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet General Secretary Joseph Stalin. It occurred at Yalta in Crimea and was held February 4 - 11, 1945. The participants discussed how to shape postwar Europe and declared an intention of self-determination for liberated Europe. Slovakia during World War II On March 14, 1939, an independent Slovakia was declared, emerging out of Hitler's invasion of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia was led by Jozef Tiso, a Catholic priest, and signed a friendship agreement with Nazi Germany. Slovakians fought in the German Army on the Eastern Front for the entirety of the war. In 1944, the Slovak National Uprising broke out and lasted from August 29, 1944, until late October. This forced Nazi Germany to send troops needed on the Eastern Front to secure Slovakia. The Soviet Red Army slowly liberated Slovakia in the spring of 1945 and entered Bratislava in early April, ending collaborationist independent Slovakia. After the end of the war, Czechoslovakia was reestablished. Publication History and Census This poster was published in 1945 by the Soviet government. This is the only known surviving example of the 1945 edition in Slovakian. We are aware of 2 surviving examples of a 1944 Russian language edition, which are held by the Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom in Tallinn, Estonia, and the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library in St. Petersburg.

Very good. Backed on linen, poster style. Size 27 x 19.5 Inches. This is a c. 1917 National Printing and Engraving Company Greek broadside that is most likely associated with recruiting during World War I. Roughly translated as 'Enlist/Register so that it cannot be said that they offered their lives in vain'. Written in Katharevousa (???????????), a conservative form of Modern Greek conceived of as a compromise between Ancient Greek and Demotic Greek, due to the broadside's message, printing style, and the era in which the printer was active, we believe this broadside to date from World War I. Greek-Americans and Military Service While researching this item, our research made us aware of the long history the Greek-Americans have with the United States military. Greek immigrants have served in every war fought by the United States, from the American Revolution to today's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Several thousand Greek-Americans served in the Allied Expeditionary Force sent to Europe during World War I, including George Dilboy, who was killed in action near Belleau, France on July 18, 1918 and was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for 'gallantry and intrepidity beyond the call of duty'. During our research, however, we became aware of the fact that Greek-Americans not only fought in the wars of their adopted nation, but those of their native homeland as well. Greek immigrants and Greek-Americans returned to Greece to fight in the Greek-Turkish War of 1897 and the Balkan War of 1912-1913. Due to the ambiguous nature of the text, and the formal nature of the language, this leaves open the possibility that this broadside could, in fact, have been printed to encourage Greeks to return to their homeland and fight against the Turks in defense of Greece's freedom. Several thousand returned to Greece to fight in these wars, particularly from large urban areas, such as Chicago. This broadside was printed by the National Printing and Engraving Company of New York, Chicago, and St. Louis in the early 20th century, most likely during 1917 or 1918 in support of the American war effort during World War I.
