Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 2nd Edition. Undated, c1858. Second edition. Small hardback, with printed titling and image to front and rear board. 11 × 16.5cm, 27pp + 5pp ads. A scarce mid-Victorian book about a dog called Snap, who despite having a pleasant life, has an exaggerated opinion of is own importance and was rude to everyone - the milkmaid, the baker's girl, the butcher, the chimney sweep but one day snaps at the horse of a Colonel and is pelted with stones. His master hasn't the heart to kill him so he is tied up in the corner of a farmyard. not the cheeriest of stories. Illustrated with twelve hand-coloured drawings, with a further two illustrations to the front and rear covers. The author was Clara de Chatelain, a writer and composer. She was prolific, translating songs into English, writing books for children, and gathering collections of fairy tales, both classic and original. It is thought her literary excesses fevered her brain and she died insane in London in 1876. Condition: Fair to good condition for age. The contents are detached from the covers but are themselves well bound. The spine is cracked. The pages are quite clean for age with just a little tanning. Previous owner's name to title page, with signature dated 1858.
