Hardcover: H 21cm x L 14.25cm. No dust jacket (i.e. lacking). Binding is firm. A very good copy. City map illustration to front endpapers; foldout color map (lightly toned and, unfortunately, no longer following its original folds) present in rear pastedown pocket; brief Foreword by WPA Administrator Harry L. Hopkins; Foreword (introductory letter) by New Orleans Mayor Robert Maestri who was also the guidebook's co-operating sponsor; Preface by Lyle Saxon and Edward P. Dreyer; eight unpaged sections of b/w plates (mostly photos but including six illustrations by Caroline Durieux); b/w illustrations as chapter headpieces and/or tailpieces; Glossary; Bibliography; Index. First edition (not stated). [6], 36, [2] pages (plus covers). Staple-bound pamphlet; H 23.5cm x L 15.25cm. Paper covers; front cover illustrated with dramatic scene of flood-born houses and debris; bottom corner of rear cover creased; slight nicks at spine ends with minor abrasion lengthwise. Sponsored by the Mayor and City Council of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Foreword by Mayor Daniel J. Shields. Note by State Director Paul Comly French attributing authorship to Peter J. Toner of the Cambria County Unit under the editorial direction of Charles V. Waters, the pamphlet's woodcut style illustrations to Edward Giordano and Herbert Palmer, and "Johnstown and Environs" map (pgs 30-31) to Horace Allen under the direction of William J. Hagerty. Includes 2 b/w photos by US Army Corps of Engineers; Epilogue; Reference/Bibliography list. The sixteenth in a series of pamphlets published by the prolific Pennsylvania Federal Writers' Project, THE FLOODS OF JOHNSTOWN enjoyed a large printing as it was utilized in the city's lobbying effort for federal flood control aid but copies are now rather uncommon. A majority of copies encountered have a Johnstown News Company blue-ink stamp upon their front covers as that business was apparently a primary local retailer (however this copy is not marred by such a stamp). Bibliographical references: Powell 1390; Scharf & Schoyer Catalogue 532; Bienes Catalogue 215; September 1941 WPA Writers' Program Publications catalogue - page 40. Mild thumbing to fore-edges of interior leaves else a very good copy. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller.

Toning and foxing to text block edges and endpapers; some foxing to several initial and rear leaves with light occurrences to interior pages which otherwise remain clean; vertical creases at centers of pages 229-230 and 317-318 from past folds. Nine-line ink inscription "To: Mrs. Lester Brown | on a very special Occasion - | 'Forgetting the number | remembering the Day | We're wishing you happiness | along life's way' | With love | 'The Holcombs' | 12-14-'43" on the half-title page (the inscribee being of a prominent Kosciusko, Mississippi family). With state tour map on front endpapers, Foreword by WPA Administrator Harry L. Hopkins, Preface by State Director Eri Douglas and State Editor Gene Holcomb, single page city tour maps, and a concluding Appendix section which features a state chronology, a Bibliography, and Index. Total of 74 b/w photographs by Willa Johnston, O.N. Pruitt, Earl M. Norman, J.R. Cofield, W. Lincoln Highton et al but, most notably, including three images by Eudora Welty ("Gathering for a Political Rally" on page 9, "Shantyboat Life" on page 16, and "A One-Mule Power Cane Press" on page 449) and four by Gene Holcomb ("A 'Dog-Trot' Cabin" on page 143, "Lighthouse, Biloxi" on page 174, "Manship Home, Jackson" on page 219, and "Gathering Pecans" on page 430). Unfortunately missing folding state map in rear folder. Bibliographical references: Dykes 155; Powell 717; Roos 3083; Bienes Catalogue 149; Scharf & Schoyer Catalogue 302 to 304; September 1941 WPA Writers' Program Publications catalogue - page 22. Eudora Welty's contribution is referenced as #H2 in Noel Polk's EUDORA WELTY; A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HER WORK. State Editor Gene Holcomb also contributed photos to MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST; YESTERDAY AND TODAY 1699 1939 which was the only other Mississippi Federal Writers' Project publication that enjoyed a broad release (there were other state FWP imprints, most notably serviceman guidebooks to Hattiesburg, Vicksburg, and Jackson, but nearly all others were community service related). Holcomb did work on the Missouri WPA guidebook after his Mississippi tenure but information regarding his post-WPA career is elusive. Gene Holcomb married Elizabeth Coleman Holcomb (1908-1983) in 1938 and she is cited in James B. Lloyd's LIVES OF MISSISSIPPI AUTHORS, 1817-1967 (University Press of Mississippi, 1981) as a Tupelo resident who served as Director of the Lee-Itawamba Library System from 1953-1975. Mrs. Holcomb authored a 1950 book on Tupelo's First Baptist Church. This bookseller has encountered several copies of the Mississippi state guidebook signed by State Director Eri Douglas but this is the first one encountered with an association to the Holcombs.
