Her family on both sides (Watson and Gooding) settled on the island almost 400 years ago. She was educated at Codrington High School, and gained distinctions in Fine Art from the Royal Drawing Society in London. She worked for many years with the stamp dealers Stanley Gibbons as an investment adviser in their rare stamp department in London. It was during this time, that in addition to stamps, she started to collect maps, prints, engravings, post cards and photographs of Barbados. Her pictures and ideas form the nucleus of this book. Having lived in Barbados, she subsequently moved to Guyana, Puerto Rico, Australia, Paris, London and Washington DC, where she lived in these countries for several years. She has travelled in Latin America, the USA, Europe and the Far East. She has also visited Africa on numerous occasions, in particular Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, Burundi and Ruanda. She now divides her time between Barbados and the United Kingdom.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. "My aim in this book is to share these old photographs and a piece of our past with other Barbadians and visitors to the island. In doing so, a small and simple piece of social history has emerged. My own collection of photographs, made during my employment over many years in the rare stamp department of the philatelist, Stanley Gibbons, in London, together with pictures from the private collections of Dr. Karl Watson, Mr. Bill Ferguson and Mr. Peter Allard, form the nucleus of this book. The photos range from the earliest known photos on the island, from 1860 up to roughly, the end of the First World War, and in a few cases a little later, to complete the story. Each page stands on its own with a description of the picture, however, read in its entirety, the book provides a brief history of the island." - Author's Note. xiv,162 pages. Bibliography. Maps. Sepia-tone half-page reproductions of wonderful archival photos atop each page. Book clean, tight and unmarked with very light wear to maroon faux-leather boards lettered in gilt. Above-average wear to dust jacket now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A quality copy of this marvelous history.; 4to.
