Cloth. Condition: Good-. FIRST EDITION. Slim 8vo. Original red cloth, paper title label to spine (very worn). Shabby and grubby: soiled and worn, bottom joint starting, head of spine frayed. Toned, inscribed in brown ink and a bold hand to ffep: "To Yeo, with best wishes, from Fard. Xmas 1916", occasional grubby finger marks. Good- A well-handled first edition copy of Thomas Crosland's anonymously published WWI-flavoured poetry collection, inscribed to "Yeo"; it seems unlikely, given the collection's focus on war, that the inscribee was Walter Yeo (18901960), the English sailor who sustained devastating facial injuries during the Battle of Jutland, and who would have, at the date of inscription in December 1916, been recuperating in preparation for his forthcoming reconstructive surgery performed by the pioneering Henry Gillies. Thomas Crosland (18151868) was a British poet, journalist and "narrow-minded bigot," perhaps best (or ill-)remembered as friend and "shady associate" of Lord Alfred Douglas; following Oscar Wilde's imprisonment and death, the pair explored numerous ways to persecute the Anglo-Irish poet's devoted friend, lover and literary executor, Robbie Ross. In 1912 Crosland had published his condemnation of Wilde's De Profundis in verse, The First Stone, as well as ghost-writing Douglas's memoir Oscar Wilde and Myself in 1914.
