Smith, the book is adapted directly from Young's original, unpublished 1860 manuscript titled "A Trip to the Gold Regions of the Rocky Mountains in the Summer of 1860," which is preserved at the Newberry Library. The text provides a vivid, first-hand account of life during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush (18581861) including the five-month journey of John D. Young and a party of seven men traveling by wagon from Chicago to the frontier gold fields of Colorado.
