Difesa e accusa nel processo in punta di penna a Carmine Crocco Donatelli, personaggio tra i più rappresentativi e controversi della rivolta contadina che infiammò il Sud all'indomani dell'Unità d'Italia. Nel 1903 il capitano medico Eugenio Massa dava alle stampe, per la tipografia G. Grieco di Melfi, la biografia del brigante. Nello stesso anno e - forse non causalmente - per gli stessi tipi, Basilide Del Zio, pubblicava una controbiografia nella quale si sforzava di contestare le affermazioni del brigante. La strana coincidenza accresce i dubbi di chi sostiene che la biografia di Crocco abbia subìto non solo il filtro linguistico del Massa ma anche quello storiografico di chi era interessato a mantenere tutta una serie di zone d'ombra, non solo intorno alla vita ed alle azioni del protagonista ma soprattutto sui meccanismi reali e sugli interessi sottostanti che furono tra le cause profonde dello scatenarsi dell'insorgenza e della rivolta prima e del brigantaggio poi. Poco comune edizione originale di questa storia del brigantaggio in cui l'A. parte dall'ascesa di Melfi a capitale del Regno normanno a meta' del XII secolo, e dalla fondazione del Regno di NapoliÂper arrivare al 1527, anno della distruzione del principato di Melfi dei Caracciolo, fino all'unita' d'Italia. L'opera passa poi a raccontare le vicende del brigante Carmine Crocco riprendendo le cronache dei processi svoltisi nella Corte d'Assise di Potenza. L'A. Basilide Del Zio, medico originario di Melfi, esponente della media borghesia locale, vuole, con quest'opera, stabilire la nobilta' d'intenti del popolo lucano, difendere il buon nome della citta' e presentare le scuse dei Lucani per aver dato vita ad un movimento reazionario violento, come il brigantaggio, e a spiegare come fossero gli emissari dei Borboni a sobillare il brigante.
