Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Zona Gale (1874 1938),was an American novelist, short story writer, and playwright. She became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1921. The close relationship she had with her parents influenced both her writing and personal life. Her books, based on her hometown, were noted for their charm and intimate realism, capturing the underlying emotions and motivations of her characters. This book is a collection of short stories that explore the lives of ordinary people and their hidden dramas. The title story features an eerie narrative where a man describes an accident that has not yet occurred. This copy is very good in gray cloth with dark blue titles and designs on the spine and front cover. Minor sunning on the spine and edges, but no other marks or damage. The unclipped dust jacket has sun darkening on the jacket spine and minor spoiling and edge chipping, particularly at the jacket spine ends. The author has inscribed the book on the front flyleaf, "Life is something more than that which we believe it to be." and dated it 1931. The book is from the collection of Herbert Marx Meyer (1903-1988), a noted Detroit book collector who assembled a large collection of early 20th century literature. He corresponded with many of the authors of the time, and thus many of his books bear friendly and warm authorial inscriptions. . Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First, Limited Edition. Duodecimo; xxvii, 92 pages, quarter linen, drab boards, blue initials inside Copy no. 365 of 400 on Verge de Rives paper. Inscribed by Sherry at Milwaukee, Wisconsin August 17, 1931 to Annie L. Towne, "with best wishes". "Mrs. Sherry is the founder of the first experimental theatre in America - Wisconsin Players, of Milwaukee. . It is the elusive that Mrs. Sherry has caught - but she has caught more. That which is not only Frenh, not only Ameroican but eternal, she has sometimes snared in words; and the volume in which these implications are recorded, has that double value without which no book lives long - the particular of a region, a culture; and the general intimation of us all." - Z. Gale. Mrs. Sherry had gone to France to direct plays for American doughboys in France. Her parents had owned the general store in Prairie du Chien. Mrs Sherry had "done in poetry for Wisconsin what Hamlin Garland and Glenway Wescott had done in prose." - Edw. Titus.
