xxxii + 90pp text, engraved frontis, 7 large engraved folding plates (each plate unfolds to 51cm x 68cm, original marbled paper over boards, large format (28cm x 20cm), in protective green folder, the entire work within a purpose made slipcase (1930s ?), half leather with raised bands, title and date on spine, an attractive prod…uction with stunning plates in clean state. AJS: The Fenice, a 74-gun ship launched in 1779, was lying on April 1st, 1783, in the Spignon channel, just inside the Porto di Malamocco (Venice), taking in stores before going to sea. Suddenly, just after the well had been reported dry, she began to make water so fast that the pumps were quite unable to cope with it. The cause of the leak does not seem to be mentioned in this account, but a list of Venetian ships puts it down to striking her own anchor. Whatever the cause, it was soon evident that the ship was bound to sink; she was therefore run ashore. Unfortunately she settled down on such a bad place that her back was broken and her mainmast was forced upwards some five feet. Unsuccessful attempts were made to shift her, and a good deal of her gear was recovered; she was then abandoned. As far as the ship herself was concerned, her history might be considered finished. The difficulty was that her wreck made the channel so narrow that it was almost useless for large ships. Clearly it was necessary to remove her if possible, and in June, 1785, the work was put in hand. This study is a detailed and superbly illustrated account of the raising and clearence of the wreck using a combination of hydraulics and mechanics. Despite numerous setbacks, described at length, the vessel was raised in the early part of 1786. On a personal note. I have had the pleasure of handling many of the great works on naval architecture published in the 18th and 19th centuries. I must say the the seven engraved plates in this book are simply splendid and copies are now uncommon as many must have been broken up for their plates. Do note that one plate has been bound-in upside down.but that's Italians for you.
