The author, writing under the pseudonym Tacitus, had been a vocal supporter of Jefferson's Democratic-Republican party and was initially enthusiastic about Jefferson's election after the bitter contest with John Adams. However, he quickly became alarmed by Jefferson's actions as president, particularly his apparent willingness to punish his political opponents and to centralize power in the executive branch. The author's letters to Jefferson are a passionate defense of the principles of limited government and the separation of powers. He argues that Jefferson's actions are a betrayal of these principles and that they threaten the very foundations of the American republic. The book is a valuable historical document that sheds light on the early years of the American republic and the challenges faced by its leaders. It is also a reminder of the importance of vigilance in defending the principles of limited government and the separation of powers.
