It examines the diverse origins of the system, including the role of both state intervention and voluntary associations. Acknowledging the opposition and suspicion from many corners, the book illustrates how the system was developed to provide a non-sectarian method of supporting education across religious divides. Through archival sources, the book analyzes the objections raised by various groups, including Irish Protestants and Roman Catholics, and reveals the tensions that arose in balancing religious instruction and moral and literary education. The insights provided in this book help illuminate the challenges and successes of inclusive education and offer valuable lessons for policymakers and educators today.
