The author, a renowned physician, was a witness to several yellow fever epidemics during one of the most tumultuous historical periods in the United States, and this book is based on his experiences and observations. Compelling historical accounts of the disease are presented to show how yellow fever originated in various locales including the coastal regions of the United States, and the West Indies. Of particular interest is the discussion of the 1793 Philadelphia epidemic, which the author experienced firsthand. The author offers fascinating and important insights into the disease's pathology and epidemiology, emphasizing that the remote cause of yellow fever is solely domestic and miasmatic in nature.
