The speech, which was delivered on January 18th, 1943, to the American Institute of Consulting Engineers, examined the impact of the Far East on American foreign policy and the broader global situation in the context of World War II. The text describes the author's experiences in China and his view that the Chinese people had developed a strong sense of nationalism that had not existed prior to Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931. He believed that this newfound nationalism would shape China's future and its relationships with other nations. The author also discussed the military capabilities of Japan and the threat they posed to the United States. He emphasized the importance of defeating Japan decisively in order to bring about a lasting peace in the Far East.
