This book is a collection of anthems from the time of the Reformation to the present day, offering a rich overview of sacred choral music in the English language. It includes works by composers such as Byrd, Gibbons, Purcell, Handel, and Boyce, tracing the evolution of the anthem from its roots in medieval plainsong to the elaborate polyphonic compositions of the Baroque era. The book provides insights into the historical and liturgical context of these anthems, exploring their role in Anglican worship and their significance in the development of Western music. It also examines the influence of continental composers on the English anthem and discusses the ways in which the anthem has reflected the changing religious and cultural landscape of England over the centuries.
