The author places the regency in the context of the decline of the French monarchy, which had been weakened by years of costly wars and the autocratic rule of Louis XIV. He examines the challenges faced by the regent, including the financial crisis, the continuing war against the Grand Alliance, and the political divisions within France. The book also explores the regent's personal life and his relationships with key figures, including his mistress, Madame de Parabà re, and his close advisor, Cardinal Dubois. Drawing on extensive research, the author provides a vivid and nuanced portrait of the regency, shedding light on a critical period in French history.
