The play was met with great success in the 17th century, and has influenced writers such as George Bernard Shaw and Anton Chekhov. Molià re uses his sharp wit to expose the absurdity and quackery of the medical profession, and to explore themes such as hypochondria, the search for love, and the generation gap. He creates a series of memorable characters including the miserly and stubborn Sganarelle, the hypochondriac Argan, and the beautiful and sensible Angà lique, who each play a part in this hilarious and thought-provoking play.
