Beginning with the ancient Greeks and their theories of matter and sensation, the author traces the development of electrical theory through the 18th century, culminating in the work of Luigi Galvani and Alessandro Volta. The author argues that the discovery of animal electricity and the invention of the voltaic pile not only revolutionized our understanding of the nervous system but also had a profound impact on the development of modern science. By examining the relationship between electricity and sensation, this book sheds new light on the nature of perception and the mind-body problem.
