This book explores the diplomatic mission of Esseid Ali Effendi, the first permanent representative of the Ottoman Empire to France, who arrived in Paris in the midst of political turmoil. Despite France's hostile stance towards his country, Esseid Ali Effendi managed to charm Parisian society with his wit and graciousness, becoming a local celebrity for a time. His presence in France coincided with Napoleon Bonaparte's rise to power and plans for expansion in the East, bringing the complex relationship between France and the Ottoman Empire into sharp focus. Through the author's meticulous research and analysis of Esseid Ali Effendi's personal papers and diplomatic correspondence, the book sheds light on the complexities of international diplomacy during a pivotal period in European history, offering valuable insights into the cultural and political dynamics that shaped relations between the East and the West.
