Book First Edition
Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, xxii, [1], 416 pp, ills, maps. From the blurb - "This unique Interdisciplinary study focuses on the cultural interaction between Byzantium and the Latin West in the Middle Ages through the Renaissance Mr. Geanakoplos studies the gradual estrangement of two kindred societies and churches, analyzing their encounter in theology, political ideology, mysticism, liturgy. law, and art. He devotes special attention to such Western figures as Bernardino of Siena, Traversari, and Erasmus, and the Byzantines Bessarion, Cydones, and Chalcondyles. Using techniques of history and sociology, the author suggests a historical periodization and a typology of acculturation as aids in interpreting cultural phenomena. Beginning with the "Dark Ages" of Western decline, he proceeds to the dramatic conflict of the Crusades, during which the two societies moved from amicable rivalry to overt hostility as Byzantium suffered the trauma of Latin conquest. In the period 1261 to 1453 the West at last achieved cultural parity with, and eventually surpassed, the East in social organization, technology, and theological dynamism. But at the same time Byzantine civilization itself underwent a surprising revival or "renaissance," despite Turkish and Latin threats to its existence. During the final, post-Byzantlne period, Greek refugee-humanists fleeing to Renaissance Italy brought with them the fruits of this Byzantine revival, which significantly affected the development of Italian humanism."
