Book block is unbound from the front panel which is not a major problem. - For more than three centuries after Columbus's voyages to America, Europeans pondered how the Old World's encounters with the New World affected European sensibilities and intellectual horizons. In this book Anthony Pagden examines some of the varied ways in which Europeans interpreted these encounters with America. -- Pagden explores the strategies used by Columbus and the early chroniclers to come to terms with the frequently startling unfamiliarity of America. He looks at how, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this unfamiliarity contributed to the belief that the encounter with the New World had radically changed the course of European history. -- Confidence in the 'impact' of the great oceanic voyages did not, however, go unchallenged. For although the new knowledge of America had greatly enlarged the European knowledge of geography and cosmology, it had done very little to create an understanding of its inhabitants. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Native- Americans came increasingly to be seen as 'Noble Savages', the critics of a society which by placing its trust in rationality and science had lost its humanity. This criticism was directed most fiercely against the European obsession with language. In the works of writers such as the Baron de Lahontan, Diderot and Rousseau, the 'Savage' became a voice crying out against the European attempt to control others through the artificiality of the written word. -- In the final chapter Pagden shows how the 'Savage's critique of European culture was turned into the fiercest of late Enlightenment attacks on the whole process of colonization and acculturation in the Americas. This was the work of the French philosophe Denis Diderot and the German, Johann Gottfried Herder. The encounter with the 'New World', claimed Diderot, may have taught the Europeans something about that elusive subject 'mankind'. But it had also helped to create the uniformity and similarity of modernity which Diderot was perhaps the first to identify as the 'global village'. For Herder this seemed to indicate only one possible solution: a# cultures must recognize their essential alieness, and the single world culture which colonization and commerce had helped to create must be allowed to revert to its natural condition of inescapable plurality.
