Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: G+. Art, Maps (illustrator). 1st. Another sad chapter in the history of Ireland was the uprising against the British occupiers in 1789. This involved about 100,000 peasants rebelling to establish a republic based on the French example. It was an idealistic effort, one doomed to failure. The rebellion took only four months to suppress, cost about 30,000 lives, was marked by excesses and savagery with no gain for the proponents of a republic. While much has been written and recorded about historic, and recent, Irish problems, including the Great Famine, the 1798 rebellioin was comparatively less well--documented until this mammoth history was compiled by the author, whose immaculate and extensive researche revealed much that was new about this aspect of the Irish Troubles. A monumental work. First edition of 1969. 416 pages including bibliography, notes and index, 30 b/w illustrations, mainly art, five maps plus map e/papers. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles VG with few small marks, light bruising spine base, bumped corners, previous owner stamp top corner FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. G+ colour art DJ has few creases with wear to upper edges with chips/short tears, top corner front flap clipped, but no other surface loss. Weight 1kg unpacfked, may require additional postage for overseas despatch.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Second Impression. pp 416. Some wear to dust-jacket with small loss along front top edge - otherwise book is in very good condition. 'In May 1798, a hundred thousand peasants rose in revolt against the British Government in Ireland. By the time the revolt had been put down four months later, thirty thousand dead were literally rotting in heaps in a smoking and desolate countryside . Seen in its European context it was an episode in the French revolutionary expansion of the 1790s: the urban bourgeoise, encouraged by promises of military help from France, had tapped and organised the ancient grievances of the peasantry [but] watched with horror their revolution develop into a savage struggle between Catholic natives and Protestant settlers.'.
