A countryman himself, he became the painter of country life and of the peasantry. After his apprenticeship in Paris, he settled, with some like-minded friends, at Barbizon near Fontainebleau, where he came back into contact with the life he had known in his childhood. Reacting against the prevalent hidebound academicism, he tried to extract from the plain landscape and its humble, hard-working inhabitants their share of beauty and emotion. Studying the people around him, he painted and drew their activities from memory in his studio and then simplified the shapes and accentuated the lines, retaining only those that characterize movement and give rhythm. In the last fifteen years there has been a strong revival of interest in Millet's art. But although our day has seen many rediscoveries, his case is rather different His paintings, and especially his drawings, in their solemn grandeur and nobility, have long borne witness to the power of their creator, who invites comparison with Delacroix and Degas. Indeed, his serious and thoughtful approach to his subject matter and his concentration on essential forms made a strong impact on modern sensibilities. Millet's true heirs were Puvis de Chavannes, Redon, and Gauguin. Redon was not far from the truth when he wrote in 1878: "The great originality of Millet was that he developed two apparently contradictory talents, rarely found in one man; he was both painter and thinker." And Van Gogh was justified in writing: "In Millet, everything is at once reality and symbol." These, then, are the great themes that run through his work and which are impressively exemplified in the present selection from his finest work as a draftsman. The author is Keeper in the Cabinet des Dessins of the Louvre, whose collections contain many hundreds of Millet's drawings. For over twenty years she has made a study of this remarkable artist, one of the great precursors of the modern movement".
