Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition; First Printing. Stiff square unmarked book in clean maroon cloth; in a rubbed dust jacket with three chips from the folds of the jacket and two tears. Quite wonderful.; 17.25 X 2 X 12.5 inches; 328 pages; The book's main strength is its profuse, high-quality reproductionsâ"hundreds of full-color and black-and-white images, including: All (or nearly all) of Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers. Fold-out reproductions of major works. Sketches, studies, preliminary drawings, and behind-the-scenes photos. Details showing his meticulous brushwork and composition. Tone and approach: Warm, appreciative, and anecdotalâ"Buechner emphasizes Rockwell's humor, humanity, and technical skill while acknowledging criticisms (e. G. , sentimentality or commercialism). It's celebratory rather than deeply critical, making it a fan-favorite for admirers of Americana art. This 1970 edition was groundbreaking as one of the first major, large-format books to treat Rockwell seriously as an artist (beyond just calendar/poster reprints). It's considered a cornerstone for Rockwell collectors.…

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Norman Rockwell, Artist and Illustrator; Thomas. S. Buechner, Director, The Brooklyn Museum; Harry N. Abrams Inc., Publishers, New York, 1970. Norman Percevel Rockwell (1894 1978) was an American author, painter and illustrator. His works have a broad popular appeal in the United States for their reflection of American culture. Rockwell is most famous for the cover illustrations of everyday life he created for The Saturday Evening Post magazine over nearly five decades. Among the best-known of Rockwell's works are the Willie Gillis series, Rosie the Riveter, The Problem We All Live With, Saying Grace, and the Four Freedoms series. Rockwell's "Breaking Home Ties" sold for $15.4 million at a 2006 Sotheby's auction. The 2013 sale of "Saying Grace" for $46 million (including buyer's premium) established a new record price for Rockwell. From the blurb of this book Norman Rockwell's subject is average America. He has painted it with such benevolent affection for so many years that a truly remarkable history of our century has been compiled. This volume, with its superb reproductions, including two-, three-, and even four-page spreads and foldouts in full color, finally does justice to an artist whose works have most often been seen only in the impermanent mediums of magazines and calendars. More than 600 of Rockwell's best illustrations are reproduced, providing an unusually broad view of his work. He painted 317 Saturday Evening Post covers, all of which are included, along with representative covers and story illustrations for such diverse publications as St. Nicholas, Life, Look, Leslie's, the Literary Digest, and Ramparts. His advertisements, which have sold socks and cough medicine, coffee and bicycle tires, fountain pens and oil heaters, light bulbs and insurance, encyclopedias, and toothpaste, are also here, as are murals, posters, greeting cards, Boy Scout calendars, and illustrations for Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Poor Richard's Almanacks, and the biography of an uncommon thrush named Willie. This rich selection provides an unparalleled panorama of nearly sixty years of American social history, seen from Rockwell's enormously popular point of view. This folio sized book, 328 pages measuring 17" X 12.2", weighs 10 pounds. The book is in near-fine condition, the only fault is very slight spotting on the tops of the pages. The dust jacket is also in near-fine condition. This is THE book on Norman Rockwell. Additional postage will be required.…
