Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Maps, Tables, Charts and Graphs (illustrator). 1st. To compile this comprehensive study of the German U-Boat campaigns of the two World Wars the author researched extensively German and British records to present a detailed account of U-Boat operations and the counter-measures that lead to the eventual defeat of the two offensives. However, he also clearly shows how Germany twice came close to success by disrupting Britain's vital Atlantic shipping supply lines. The book covers the two campaigns in chronological order, with the text material complemented by photographs, graphs, charts and tables showing the balance between U-Boat successes and merchat ship losses. Critical factors in the campaigns, political, strategic and tactical, are well explored as are aspects such as the German inability to institute concentrated group attacks in WWI, while their wolf pack operations in WWII brought near success. The convoy system adopted by the Allies late in WWI, but early in WWII, was to be an important influence, as was the entry of the USA into both conflicts. Counters to the U-Boats, including mines and escorts in WWI are also covered. . In WWII aircraft were to play an increasing important role, with technology, particularly electronics, where the advantage continually shifted from one side to the other. The evolution of the U--Boat from the small, primative coastal craft used at the opening of WWI to the development of technically superior models being introduced toward the end of WWII is well documented. The record shows that during the two conflicts U-Boats sank more than 8000 ships of 27million tons of Allied shipping. On the other side off the ledger 999 U-Boats were sunk, taking 33,000 officers and men with them. This was an imporant addition to the naval literature of both World Wars and probably is still the most complete one-volume study of the topic. First edition of 1989 from Arms and Armour, 190 pages including appendices, bibliography, source notes and index. illustrated throughout with b/w photos, title page double page photo spread, numerous maps, charts, tables and graphs. During the two world wars, German submarines sank 8,209 merchant vessels grossing more that 27 million tons. So effective a menace did the U-boats become that in both wars - in 1917 and again in 1941-42 - they came close to bringing Britain to her knees. This book, illustrated with more than 150 photographs, diagrams and charts, sets out to tell the twin stories of the Battles of the Atlantic, providing the reader with the opportunity to compare the course of the two campaigns.
