Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Printing. 260 Pages. The author is the Late Inspector of Prisons in Great Britain. He devotes much of the book to separating the fact from the legend of the Inquisition, but he does not stop his narrate there. Sadly enough, Spain has been slow in the progre…ss of prison reform and Griffiths traces Spain's almost unwilling advancement towards a mordern penal lsystem. This is not always pleasant reading, but it is history that needs to told and remembered for it teaches us in a horrifyingly unforgettable way, lessons that need to be learned.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Hardcover - APPEARS NEW AND UNREAD! GIFT QUALITY ITEM. Major Arthur Griffiths was a British author, journalist, former military officer, and prison inspector whose combination of institutional experience and historical knowledge qualified him unusually well to write on subjects related to imprisonme…nt and criminal justice. His military career preceded his work as an inspector of prisons and his subsequent prolific output as a popular historian specializing in criminal history and penal subjects, and his direct familiarity with prison systems lent his historical writing an authority grounded in professional experience as well as research. In Spanish Prisons is a historical examination of the Spanish penal and inquisitorial system across four centuries, tracing the history of imprisonment, persecution, and punishment in Spain from the establishment of the Spanish Inquisition in 1478 through to the later nineteenth century. The chronological scope encompasses one of the most dramatic periods in Spanish history, covering the full arc of the Inquisition's activity from its origins under Ferdinand and Isabella through its various phases and eventual suppression alongside the broader history of the Spanish penal system. The Spanish Inquisition occupies a central place in the work, representing one of the most extensively documented institutions of religious persecution and judicial process in European history. Griffiths examines the origins, organization, and practices of the Inquisition with historical thoroughness, addressing inquisitorial procedures including denunciation, secret trial, torture, and the range of penalties within their broader religious, political, and social context rather than either sensationalizing or minimizing them. The broader history of Spanish imprisonment and penal practice beyond the inquisitorial context is also addressed, examining conditions of confinement and the treatment of prisoners within the Spanish criminal justice system across the period covered, providing context for understanding the Inquisition within a wider culture of judicial punishment. Griffiths brings to this material the narrative accessibility of a practiced popular historian, presenting complex and often disturbing historical content in a form that engages a general readership without sacrificing historical substance, representing a characteristic product of the Victorian tradition of popular historical writing on criminal and penal subjects.

Hardcover / Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Hardback. For 300 years The Inquisition was the most powerful and deadly force in Spain. Thousands were condemned and executed and we can only guess at the number tortured. Although some exaggeration has crept into the popular history of The Inquisition, the sim…ple historical truth is enough to give us pause and reason to reflect. It was created to eradicate heresy in Spain. It should be remembered that at the time spiritual and temporal powers were closely allied (pope and king) and all believed that uniformity was necessary and desired. Heresy was everywhere treated not only as an attack on the Church but as treason to the State. The Spanish Inquisition was an affair of state as well as an ecclesiastical court. It was a court of torture and death run by the Church in the name of God, but sanctioned and supported by the State. The author devotes much of his book to separating the fact from the legend of the Inquisition, but he does not stop his narrative there. Unfortunately, Spain had been slow in the progress of prison reform and Griffiths traces Spain's almost unwilling advancement towards a modern penal system. 260pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. F. in f. dw.
