Dessen irrationaler Raum und gestisch bewegte Fläche gaben ihm den Hintergrund für eine neue poetische Umdeutung der einfachen Dinge, der Werkzeuge und Utensilien der alltäglichen Umwelt. Vor diesen artifiziellen Grund gestellt, gehängt oder in ihn hineinverfügt, erhielten diese einfachen Dinge eine andersartige Qualifikation, die sie aus der ihnen gewöhnlichen Sphäre des Nützlichen und Bekannten in die des Poetischen und Unbekannten - und damit Staunenswerten und Wunderbaren - herüberholte. Jene sonderbare Magie des gewöhnlichen Dinges in seiner härtesten Materialität, die Marcel Duchamp entdeckt hatte und die dann in Dada und Surrealismus zu immer neuen Manipulationen mit den Dingen und Dingbildern führte, war auch für Jim Dine der Anstoss, das gewöhnliche Ding als poetisches Requisit einer inneren Landschaft zu begreifen und vorzuzeigen, - als dingliche Vegetation jener 'inscapes', von der die amerikanischen Maler seit Matte gern sprachen.
