Softcover. Condition: Very Good. Number xviii of a limited edition of 280 copies. Unmarked and undamaged. Overall, very sound and presentable. Publisher's note: "Artificiana is a small book, published in 1819. It was a sort of careers guide of its time in which the bright young working-class boy would find articles surveying thirty-four skilled trades. Each article gives, in more or less detail, a description of the kind of work involved, with a wood-engraving. There is a section on the printing trade comprising the six articles which are reprinted here. The trade described in Artificiana was, in some aspects, about to become out of date - making paper by hand and printing with a wooden press were already on the way out, to be replaced by continuous production and cast-iron (and, for newspapers, steam-driven) presses; the first type-casting machine was invented in 1838, and guillotines for cutting paper in 1857. Peter Cain, Reader in Economic History at the University of Birmingham, has contributed an introduction in which he relates the printing trade to the Britain of 1820." ix, 24 pages.
