This book presents the proceedings of a two-day event where delegates from Democratic State Central Committees across the country met to discuss the upcoming 1856 presidential election and to select delegates to the Democratic National Convention. The main focus is on the resolutions and addresses surrounding the topic of slavery that the authorâ"a prominent figure in the Democratic partyâ"considers as a threat to the Union. He argues that slavery should be addressed solely through the actions of individuals and local governments, without interference from the federal government or political parties, and warns against the dangers of sectional strife and political movements that seek to use the force of government to accomplish their aims. The insights in this volume highlight the ongoing debate over the role of the federal government in regulating slavery and the preservation of states' rights.
