This fascinating book explores the curriculum of the Recruit Educational Center (REC), a unique language learning program established during World War I to teach non-English speaking soldiers. It sheds light on the educational methods, principles, and objectives of the REC. Drawing on historical context, the author presents a compelling account of how this innovative curriculum sought to foster American ideals, promote literacy, and instill a sense of pride and patriotism among recruits from diverse backgrounds. Through a combination of lessons, drills, and activities, the REC aimed to empower these soldiers with essential communication skills, knowledge of American history and culture, and a deeper understanding of the country they were fighting for. The book provides valuable insights into the complexities of language acquisition, the challenges of educating non-native speakers, and the transformative power of education in shaping individuals and fostering national unity.
