The author builds upon the philosophical writings of the past, particularly Plato, Aristotle, and Locke, to provide a comprehensive theory on personal identity and resurrection. The author argues against two popular theories: the Lockean theory which places identity in consciousness and the Cartesian theory which places identity in the soul. Instead, the author argues that the body is an integral part of personhood, and there can be no resurrection that does not include the body. Resurrection is not only possible but necessary because it is the means by which we can fulfill our telos, or purpose. We were not meant for this life alone. We are meant to live in communion with God. This elevated understanding of resurrection gives the Christian hope a new depth and meaning, allowing each individual to be fully known and loved in the body, soul, and spirit.
