Their fine collection, while concentrating on works from the period 1880 to 1940, actually extends from an 1820 wash drawing by Thomas Sully to a 1968 acrylic by Lucas Samaras. It is especially rich in figurative works, still lifes, and abstractions, including several influenced by Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Of exceptional interest are a series of images of women, both portraits and figure studies, a number of which echo the work of the Pre-Raphaelites. Drawn from Tradition, which publishes the Adler Collection virtually in its entirety, provides a fascinating survey of the achievements of American draftsmen. The nineteenth-century works in the collection include sheets by Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, John Haberle, William M. Harnett, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Eastman Johnson, and John Frederick Kensett; among the later artists represented are George Ault, George Bellows, Isabel Bishop, Oscar Bluemner, Joseph Cornell, Robert Henri, AI Hirschfeld, Rockwell Kent, Louis Lozowick, Reginald Marsh, Elie Nadelman, John Singer Sargent, Saul Steinberg, and Charles White. In all, Drawn from Tradition documents and reproduces nearly 100 drawings in full color and duotone. ISBN 155595023X Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1550 Mit zahlr. auch farb. Abb.
