Originalbroschur. Condition: Sehr gut. 160 S. Einband leicht berieben. - This is the age of Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley, of Nelson and the Duke of Wellington, of Jane Austen and Mary Wollstonecraft, of Turner and Constable, of Edward Jenner and Sir Humphry Davy, and - naturally enough - of the Prince Regent and (among many other women) his separated wife Queen Caroline, gamely sporting her come-hither feathers. They are all here - over sixty lords and ladies, soldiers and statesmen, writers (many women) and painters, scientists and sportsmen, moral reformers and mistresses. And they are all very good company indeed. In pictorial terms, they are also something of a surprise. Although this is the Romantic period, what is striking about so many of these portraits is precisely their lack of Romantic extravagance, sentiment or melodrama. The best workaday portrait painters of the Regency period - James Northcote, John Opie, Thomas Phillips, Henry William Pickersgill - favoured a direct, relatively plain, head-and-shoulders portraiture. Their palettes reflect the clothes chosen by their subjects, and tend to be cool, sober, and understated. The revolutionary philosopher, William Godwin, whose Political Justice (1793) set fire to the young minds of half his generation, is painted by Northcote with an almost Roman severity, a classical sage with the light of Reason glowing on (or from) his brow. The visionary poet, William Blake, who conversed with angels in his studio, is presented by Phillips as a successful small-businessman, with a fine clean neckcloth and a gold seal on a red ribbon at his waistcoat, with the engraver's burin poised ready in his hand.
