Juli 1941 in Altaussee, Salzkammergut) ist eine österreichische Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin. Leben: Barbara Frischmuth wurde in Altaussee als Tochter des Hoteliers Anton Frischmuth, der im Zweiten Weltkrieg 1943 in Russland fiel, und dessen Gattin Maria geb. Schmidt geboren. Nach dem Tode des Vaters führte seine Ehefrau den Hotelbetrieb bis 1956 weiter und verheiratete sich erneut. Sie verbrachte ihre Kindheit in Altaussee, besuchte die Gymnasien in Gmunden und Bad Aussee und später wegen eines Umzuges das Pestalozzi-Gymnasium in Graz, wo sie auch maturierte. An der Karl-Franzens-Universität studierte Frischmuth ab Herbst 1959 am Dolmetsch-Institut Türkisch, Englisch und später Ungarisch. Ein Stipendienaufenthalt führte sie 1960/61 an die türkische Atatürk Universität in Erzurum. 1964 übersiedelte Frischmuth nach Wien, wo sie das Studium der Turkologie, Iranistik und Islamkunde begann. Im Herbst 1966 brach sie ihr Studium ab und wurde hauptberuflich als Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin aktiv. Schon während ihrer Studienzeit veröffentlichte sie Gedichte und wurde 1962 Mitglied der später so genannten Grazer Gruppe". Sie nahm an Lesungen teil und kam mit dem Forum Stadtpark in Kontakt, zu dessen Gründungsmitglied sie während ihrer Zeit im Erzurum ernannt wurde. Mehrere Auslandsaufenthalte führten sie in die Türkei, nach Ungarn, Ägypten, England, China, Japan und die USA, wo sie am Oberlin College in Ohio und an der Washington University in St. Louis Vorlesungen hielt. Heute lebt die Autorin in Altaussee. Dort befindet sich auch ihr Garten, der den Stoff für ihre bislang drei Gartengeschichten-Bücher liefert. Sie ist als Schriftstellerin, Übersetzerin und Kolumnistin tätig. Barbara Frischmuth ist weiters die Nichte von Edith Hauer-Frischmuth, deren Lebensgeschichte sie in ihr Werk "Einander Kind" einfließen ließ, zu der sie allerdings ein familiär gespaltenes Verhältnis hatte. .
