Er lässt sich überreden, einen abenteuerlichen Viehtransport von Lettland nach Usbekistan zu begleiten, arbeitet danach als Gärtner in einem Erholungspark, organisiert illegale Undergroundkonzerte und endet schließlich bei der Armee: der Beginn seines größten Abenteuers. Der Gefreite Kaminer landet im dritten Abwehrring des Moskauer Verteidigungskreises, ein Militärgelände mitten im Wald, das aus ein paar Baracken, drei Raketen, einem alten Radargerät, dreißig unmotivierten Soldaten und vier Offizieren besteht. Die erste Panne ereignet sich bereits, als Mathias Rust über dem Verteidigungskreis seine Runden dreht und sich schließlich unbehelligt zum Roten Platz aufmacht. Kein Wunder, sind die Soldaten doch damit beschäftigt, Eidechsen zu präparieren, mit Raketenfarbe zu bestreichen und eine Naturkundeausstellung zu eröffnen. Allen voran natürlich Wladimir.
