Bezirk) war ein bedeutender österreichischer Maler, einer der bekanntesten Vertreter des Wiener Jugendstils und Gründungspräsident der Wiener Secession. . Der Künstler pflegte enge Beziehungen zu einigen seiner Auftraggeber, die vornehmlich aus dem assimilierten jüdischen Wiener Großbürgertum stammten. Intime Beziehungen pflegte er insbesondere zu seinen Modellen aus großbürgerlichen Kreisen. Er galt als für seine Zeit progressiv, weil er in der Sexualität den Frauen eine aktive Rolle zugestand. Klimt war nie verheiratet, hatte aber zu mehreren Frauen intime Beziehungen und zeugte sieben Kinder (siehe Abschnitt Klimts Nachkommen). Wie weit die Beziehungen mit den von ihm porträtierten Frauen seiner Auftraggeber gingen, etwa mit Serena Lederer, der Gattin August Lederers, oder mit Adele Bloch-Bauer, der Gattin des Zuckerindustriellen Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, liegt im Dunkeln. Enge, aber nicht notwendigerweise sexuelle Beziehungen bestanden auch zu Alma Mahler-Werfel. Emilie Flöge, für deren Modesalon Klimt Entwürfe zu Reformkleidern anfertigte, wird als seine Lebensgefährtin bezeichnet. .
