Er gelangt durch seine Freundschaft zu Alberto Cavalcanti 1924 zum noch stummen Film und schreibt für "Ein freudloses Leben" nicht nur das Drehbuch, sondern steckt auch viel Geld in die Produktion, um seiner jungen Frau zu schauspielerischem Ruhm zu verhelfen. Es folgen zahlreiche Stummfilme, in denen Renoir Regie führt und 1934 begründet er, lange vor den Italienern, mit "Toni" das neorealistische Kino. Wirklichkeit und Poesie, Phantasie und tägliches Leben sind die Zutaten seiner Filme. 1935 entsteht nach dem Drehbuch von Jacques Prévert "Das Verbrechen des Monsieur Lange", von Francois Truffaut später als spontanster und schönster Film Renoirs bezeichnet. "Eine Landpartie" (1936) und "Das Frühstück im Grünen" (1959) sind "Gedichte über Landschaft und Menschen" und stehen im Gegensatz zu seinem wohl berühmtesten Film "Die große Illusion" (1937) und "Die Spielregel" (1939). Während des zweiten Weltkriegs emigriert Renoir in die USA, wo Filme wie "Dies ist mein Land" (1943) und "Tagebuch einer Kammerzofe" (1946) entstehen. In Indien dreht er 1950 "Der Strom" und in Italien 1952 "Die goldene Karosse" mit Anna Magnani - Renoirs erste Farbfilme. 1955 folgt "French Can Can" und 1959 sein brillantes Alterswerk "Das Testament des Dr. Cordelier".
