Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Before the welfare state, neighbours and compatriots built their own safety nets. Few records illuminate that world as closely as Louis Volz's German Beneficial Union and German Beneficial Union of Pittsburgh, a concise compilation of the first twenty-five years of this immigrant mutual benefit society. Every contribution here meant security. Written from within the organisation, it traces the workers of the Union and their success in late 19th century Pennsylvania and turn of the century Pittsburgh, sketching the experiences of german american immigrant workers, pittsburgh german community life and a benevolent association success story that helped define an enduring example of immigrant mutual benefit societies in America. As a fraternal benefit society history and mutual aid society chronicle, Volz's account balances institutional detail with the human story of belonging, solidarity and cultural continuity within german american fraternal organizations.Today it stands as a primary source institutional history for researchers of fraternal orders, social and labour historians, and anyone fascinated by how ordinary people organised to protect one another. Readers interested in German American genealogy will recognise a rare german american genealogy reference to networks of faith, work and community, while casual readers encounter an intimate portrait of everyday lives shaped by duty and mutual responsibility. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.…
