Hardcover. Condition: New. Bombay, 1943. The young Parsi actress who was playing Salome in the newly founded Theatre Group s production of Oscar Wilde s eponymously titled play drew the line at performing the Dance of the Seven Veils, a sort of Biblical striptease . So director Sultan Padamsee s 19-year-old sister Roshen stepped in. And met the handsome, intense Arab who played the male lead Ebrahim Alkazi. In 1946, they were married. Thus was forged one of the greatest alliances in the world of theatre and art in postIndependence India. Ebrahim Alkazi took English theatre from its early beginnings in Bombay to national and even international acclaim as he directed and acted in more than a hundred plays, ranging from Oedipus Rex, Murder in the Cathedral and Macbeth in the 1950s, to Ashadh Ka Ek Din, Andha Yug and Tughlaq in the 60s and 70s. As director of the fabled National School of Drama from 1962 to 1977, he launched some of the finest actors of our times, including Om Shivpuri, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Rohini Hattangadi, Manohar Singh and Uttara Baokar. Chief costume designer and seamstress for all his productions was Roshen Alkazi. In 1977, when Ebrahim and Roshen decided to open Art Heritage in Delhi, it gave a new dimension to the world of art, as the leading artists of the day, including M.F. Husain, Krishen Khanna, F.N. Souza, Tyeb Mehta, K.G. Subramanyam and Laxma Goud, flocked to this space that was not just a commercial gallery, but a foundation for documenting and preserving the arts. With more than 50 rare photographs, Enter Stage Right is the story of theatre in India as it has never been told before to be treasured by theatre buffs, and savoured by anyone who loves a good story.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. This monograph is a study of the tangled relationship between the East India Company and the great temple at Jagannathpur. The image of Jagannath is vivid in both east and west. In India Lord Jagannath is a beneficent universal god in whose name spiritual and material comfort is dispensed to all regardless of caste or class pilgrims will sacrifice everything to obtain Darshan of their lord who is rich in his association with Vaishnavite traditions and with tribal rituals of the Orissan hills near his famous temple in Puri. But it is Jagannaths Rath Jatra or Car Festival which has captivated the western imagination to the extent of giving birth to the word Juggernaut by now a well established part of the English language. 184 pp.

"Thinking about notions of time in India still evokes images of circles and wheels symbolizing the fading away of collective and individual histories into the repetitious, cyclical movement of cosmic death and rebirth. However, time is perceived and reckoned in India in many different ways mirrored in a wide spectrum of philosophical and theological interpretations, methods of calculation, mythological narratives and ritual performances. The richness of concepts and practices shows the concern for different dimensions of the experience of time in Indian cultures. The interplay between time as quality and quantity persists in many aspects of social life in India and has not been replaced by the advent of modern standardisations. Thus, ritual calendars and the concerns for auspicious or inauspicious moments co-exist with other methods of time reckoning, such as the digital clock or dynastic eras. The essays collected in this volume highlight this multiplicity by studying both notions and practices of time in relation to the different contexts in which they are enacted. Scholars from different disciplines address these topics with regard to history, religion, methods of time-reckoning, festivals, life-cycle rituals, kinship and modern historiography. The essays deal with both, pan-Indian notions and traditions located in Orissa. While there are some distinct features that relate Orissa in particular, the regional and local traditions often draw on conceptual frameworks used in other parts of the subcontinent too." (jacket).

  • Lord Jagannatha of Puri one of most famous Hindu deities was the Rashtradevata of Orissa in the medieval period and became a symbol of Oriya identity in modern times The erstwhile imperial Gajapati kings of Orissa and their successors the Khurda Rajas enjoyed special privileges in the cult as Adya sevaka or first servant of Jagannatha and even controlled it to a certain extent The present work consists of a comprehensive palm leaf manuscript combining several originally separate Oriya texts of the fifteenth sixteenth to eighteenth centuries compiled by the Deula Karanas the temple scribes of Puri in the late eighteenth or the early nineteenth century They provide firsthand and most authoritative information on land endowments to religious shrines throughout the medieval Orissan period on rituals and duties of priests and temple servitors and most important on legendary and various historical and cultural events during the reign of the Gajapatis The present compendium is a unique source for the study of the cult of Jagannatha and the culture and history of pre colonial Orissa Coming to light for the first time it may be regarded as the most important study of its genre after the publication of Puris temple chronicle the Madala Panji by AB Monanty in 1940 230 pp.

The book Rural Employment has been designed to provide sufficient feedback on rural employment. Employment is a vital problem of Indian economy. Majority of people in India live in about 7000 000 villages. They depend on agro and agro based activities for their livelihood. India cannot be self reliant and prosperous until the rural mass engage for their employment. Corporate sectors non governmental organisations (NGOs) may play their crucial role in this regard. Panchayati Raj institutions (PRIs) may monitor/supervise in execution of programmes launched by the govt. to a great extent. 460 pp.

  • Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. The Second Orissa Research Project of the German Research Council complemented the first one on the great tradition of Jagannatha of Puri with comprehensive studies on various sub-regional and local traditions and identities in the hinterland of dominant coastal Orissa. The present volume introduces (auto) biographies as a fascinating new source for the study of local history and contemporary politics. The narrative brings out the under explored history and identity politics and cultural assertion of a marginal community like Kurmi Mahantas of Orissa in the quest of their Adivasi identity. The work contains, along with its original version, an abridged English translation of the Biography of Niranjan Mahanta, a little known but vital socio-religious reformer of the Kurmi community. The biography focuses on Niranjan s life and time and his engagements as a community activist. It offers insights into the popular culture and the social history of the former Feudatory State of Mayurbhanj in Northern Orissa and its neighbouring districts in present-day Jharkhand and West Bengal. The study exemplifies how a marginal community was engaged in re-defining and locating itself within the hegemonic social order as dominated by the Hindu Brahmanical tradition while battling against the very order. • 411 S. Reg. Kart.mS. *neuwertig* Widmung von Schnepel*. Twenty years after the publication of The Cult of Jagannath (Eschmann, Kulke and Tripathi eds. 1978, Manohar) a conference was held in Heidelberg, Germany at which some of the past foci of Orissan research were reconsidered. By thus revisiting Jagannath, it was considered whether, in what respect and to what degree a shift in methods, theories, paradigms or intellectual interests has taken place during the past two decades. The articles published in this book represent rewritten versions of papers held at this conference. They include contributions from social anthropology, history, Indology, religious studies, archaeology, and political science, discussing topics as diverse as religious practices among Orissan adivasis, the renewal of the body of Jagannath, the history of Mahima Dharma sect, the ritual politics of a Dhenkanal village, and the rebellious attitude of a jungle king, Compared with the Jagannath volume of 1978, a certain shift in interest can be discerned, away from the centre and the dominant groups to (apparently) peripheral or marginal areas or groups. Thus, for example, the present volume features contributions on little kings rather than the Gajapatis, on west Orissa rather than the central Mahanadi delta, on fishermen rather than Brahmans, and on village cults rather than the Puri temple. And even where Jagannath is re-investigated, it is his worship by subaltern groups rather than the scriptural, orthodox view that is the present focus of study.
